hard bop

Kenny Dorham, trumpet; Hank Mobley, tenor saxophone; Horace Silver, piano; Doug Watkins, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

This performance offers the bop sound that would become the mainstream for the decades to follow and is still common today. The solos are very much in the style of bebop but are more influenced by inflection and not so concerned with the constant double-time activity of early bop. The rhythm section regained some of its aggression and is more hard driving than cool. Notice how drummer Art Blakey really pushes the rest of the players. This was his style in up-tempo numbers.
